Goal $150.00

Many of you know that I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 14 years ago. I am considered fortunate in the world of Parkinson’s.  Even though I have “on” and “off” times, my symptoms are generally related to some trouble walking and flexibility issues.   If you saw me sitting down, most of the time you would not be able to always pick up that I have the disease.  Although limited to some degree, when I am “on” I still play golf, racquetball, travel and workout.  Fortunately for me, we have good insurance, and I have excellent doctors.  I live in Charlotte, where there is good care close by, and resources to battle the disease.  Unfortunately, there are many in the Carolinas who are not so lucky.

There are around 36,000 people in the Carolinas who have this disease.  Although PD is usually considered a condition for those in their 70’s and 80’s, about 10-20% of those diagnosed every year have what is called “early-onset” PD.  This means that they were diagnosed before the age of 50 (that’s me- I was diagnosed at age 47).  Many of this total of 36,000 are in rural areas, without specialists to turn to.  They don’t have the resources to develop a peer group with those sharing the disease.

There are a number of national groups that are prominent in the fight, and I support their efforts.  Some of the more recognizable ones are The Michael J. Fox Foundation and the Parkinson’s Foundation.  These national organizations are excellent at raising money towards finding a cure, as well as disseminating information via their website about the condition.

Since I have gone down this path, I have become involved with an organization called the Parkinson’s Association of the Carolinas (  This non-profit (501C3) organization has a different focus that the two groups mentioned above.  PAC is involved at the local level with organizing and giving people tools where they are located.  We help support over 90 Support Groups for people with Parkinson’s (and their caregivers) throughout both Carolinas.  These groups are instrumental in helping people gain support from other PD sufferers, as well as share useful tips to relating to the disease.  We support and facilitate classes for dancing, yoga, and exercise around the two states.  Without an organization like PAC, there would be no point person(s) to energize the creation of these programs.  This is something that a national group like the two above cannot fill.  We do not charge for these services and are totally dependent upon donations from people like yourself to make this work continue.

ON April 13th in Symphony Park (the NW corner of SouthPark Mall) there will be a Move It! Walk.  It is one of our ways to raise awareness to our organization, as exercise is key to handling the disease.  It is also one of our main ways we raise money to support these efforts. I have expanded my mailing list some this year.  Please don’t feel an obligation to give, but if this topic strikes a note with you, I would ask that you do one of two things (or better yet, both):

  1. Attend the MoveIt! Walk on April 13th.  Sign up at and select the blue “Join this team” button.
  2. Make a donation to PAC as part of this walk.  To do so, visit my team page at: Click the red “Donate Now” tab to make a contribution to my team.

I thank you in advance for your help.
